  • A total of 2,000 deaths in covid-19
A total of 2,021 people have died of covid-19 in Sweden. This is an increase of 84 people over the past 24 hours, the Public Health Agency reported at its daily press conference. In total, 16,755 people have been confirmed infected by the coronavirus in Sweden, of which 751 were diagnosed over the last 24 hours. At present, 524 patients are receiving intensive care. “We see absolutely no decline [of cases] in Stockholm,” said FHM Deputy State Epidemiologist Anders Wallensten. In Stockholm, 26 percent are now estimated to be, or have been, infected on May 1.

  • Significant decrease among elderly
At the end of March, new guidelines were released for intensive care priorities during the corona pandemic. Since then, the proportion of covid patients over 70 has more than halved in the Stockholm region. The share has dropped from 26% in March to 11% in April. For the whole of Sweden, the corresponding proportion is 28% in March to 19% in April.

  • Sweden's higher death toll compared to neighboring countries is due to the amount of infected in elderly housing according to epidemiologist Anders Tegnell. "What we do in the country must have an effect," says State Epidemiologist Tegnell, "but the amount of deaths among elderly is troubling."
  • More funds allocated for summer studies
An additional 6,000 study places at universities and colleges have been allocated for this summer. The government is contributing SEK 177 million, which also includes grants for students. Most new spots are offered at the Linnaeus University (Linnéuniversitetet, Kalmar) with about 1,000, Uppsala opened for 860 spots, Stockholm University 540 and Gothenburg and Lund University 400 each.

  • Government wants to limit gambling bets
The Swedish government wants to temporarily limit the amounts that can be bet in online games to SEK 5,000 per week in order to stop the problematic increase in gambling at, among other things, online casinos that have increased in corona times.
