See the award-winning film Uncle (Denmark, 2019; dir. Frelle Petersen) in New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House!
Kris (Jette Søndergaard) lives on a derelict farm in a small Danish town that she runs with her disabled uncle, with a quirky but loving relationship filled with daily routines and moments of comfortable silence. But when one day she miraculously saves the life of a newborn calf, her dream of becoming a veterinarian — which she had put on hold to care for her uncle — is rekindled. In pursuit of her studies, she develops a friendship with the chatty veterinarian Johannes, and begins to branch out into the world beyond her small farm — even starting a relationship with a young man in town. But her overprotective role in her relationship with her uncle, and her heavy workload in maintaining their farm, continue to get in the way of her blossoming new life.
A beautiful exploration of small-town Danish life that is both stunningly picturesque and quaintly endearing in its navigation of young love and complicated relationships, Uncle has been acclaimed as “a film of revelatory detail (ScreenDaily) and a “quite exquisite slice of humanity” (Cineurope). Winner of the Tokyo Grand Prix Best Film, 2020 Tokyo International Film Festival; Official Selection, 2020 Tallinn Black Nights and Göteborg film festivals. Directed by Frelle Petersen (105 min. In Danish with English subtitles)
Film screenings will take place as a 3 PM matinee and 7 PM evening showing. Tickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above; film screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall. All attendees are required to present proof of vaccination upon arrival in compliance with New York State government.
