“Främling” 30 years later - Hard to believe but it is 30 years since Carola Häggkvist sang “Främling” at Melodifestivalen (the Eurovision Song Contest) and became Carola to all of Sweden. She was 16 years old at the time. Swedish Television has now confirmed that the star is set to sing her breakthrough hit in a new version at the Swedish final of this year’s Meolidfestivalen at the Friends Arena in Solna on March 9.
-
“Främling” may be the most epic of all Swedish Eurovision Song Contest contributions, and Swedes who weren’t even born in 1983 still know at least parts of the song. As a matter of fact it is Carola, more than Abba, who is most closely associated with Melodifestivalen. She has competed on five occasions and won in Sweden three times, once winning the European final (1991).
-
The song became the title track for her debut album of 1983, which sold around one million copies and remains the biggest-selling album in Swedish music history.
